Налоги, которыми облагается имущество лица в момент его смерти. В Великобритании основным налогом на наследство был налог на наследуемое имущество (estate duty), введенный в 1894 г. В 1974 г. он был заменен налогом на передачу капитала (capital-transfer tax), который, в свою очередь, в 1986 г. уступил место налогу на наследство (inheritance tax). Оба вышеназванных налога применимы и к прижизненным дарениям, которые еще раньше начали облагаться налогом на наследуемое имущество, так как в противном случае удавалось избегать обложения любой формой налога на наследство путем прижизненной передачи всего имущества или его части.
